Safe & Painless EKGs

If you’re experiencing any kind of chest pain it should be addressed immediately as this is a serious concern. If you believe that what you are experiencing is a life-threatening emergency dial 911. However, if you feel that the best course of action is coming into Sunshine Urgent Care, your physician may choose to perform an echocardiogram, more commonly known as an EKG test. An urgent care EKG should be considered in the event that you’ve complained about chest pain or if they want to investigate some type of abnormality. 

What is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram uses high-frequency sound waves to take real-time pictures of your heart. The sound waves are directed to the heart from a hand-held transducer that sends and receives these signals.

The sound waves then bounce off of the heart walls and valves where they then are received by the transducer where they are used to produce images of the heart. These images appear on a monitor screen and are stored digitally. Your physician is then able to obtain accurate and precise measurements of the four chambers of the heart. They can also study the appearance and motion of the heart valves. The measurements that are taken from these pictures help your physician determine how well your heart is functioning. 

What To Expect During An Echocardiogram

In order to improve the quality of your EKG images, a cool gel is applied to the chest area. It may feel uncomfortable and the cool gel may be a shock to the system but it will be wiped off thoroughly at the completion of the exam.

No special preparation, like fasting, is needed in order to have an EKG procedure. Some examinations can last up to an hour, it just depends upon how easily the information is obtained.

If your physician is concerned as a result of the testing, they will typically refer you to a cardiologist or, if it's critical enough, send you to a hospital.
